FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH
Enhanced Super continuum generation in water in the presence of ultra dilute solutions
p. 1
PK Joshi, AK Dharmadhikari, PM Barvalia, VP Joshi
Intense ultrashort laser beam, after propagation through a transparent medium (water in this work), experiences self-focusing, thereby increasing the intensities in localized area to such high values so as to induce nonlinear optical effects like the generation of white light super-continuum and multi-photon absorption. We have carried out experiments for measuring super-continuum generation in water that contains ultra dilute solutes (of ethanol). Our observations of generation of super-continuum spectra in various solutes indicate that our measurements are able to make a distinction between normal water and water mixed with such ultra-dilute solutes i.e. Homoeopathic medicines.

Objective:
To elicit the pathogenetic response of the drug Amoora rohituka in homoeopathic potencies on healthy human beings.
Methodology:
Drug Amoora rohituka was proved by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy through double-blind placebo-controlled method. The study was conducted at three centers. The drug was proved in two potencies (6C and 30C) on 53 apparently healthy volunteers who were selected after conducting pre-trial medical examination by the medical specialists and routine laboratory investigations. In the first phase volunteers were given 56 doses (04 doses per day for 14 days) of placebo. In the next two phases 56 doses (04 doses per day for 14 days) of each potency or placebo were consumed. The symptoms generated during the trial period were noted by the volunteers and elaborated by the Proving Masters. The data obtained from all the three centers was compiled at proving-cum-data processing cell at CCRH headquarters after de- -coding.
Observations:
Out of the 53 provers who were on actual drug trial, 29 manifested symptoms. Drug was able to produce symptoms in each potency more or less related to every part of the body. Some of the symptoms have been reproved which are mentioned in different literatures after the fragmentary proving.
Conclusion:
New and reproved pathogenetic responses elicited during the proving trial expands the scope of use of the drug Amoora rohituka and will benefit the research scholars and clinicians. These symptoms will carry more value when verified clinically.

Curcuma longa
is a lesser known drug in Homoeopathy. Council had conducted a thorough proving and subsequently a multi-centric clinical verification study was taken up to verify the pathogenesis of this drug. It is a medicine being widely used as an appetizer, carminative, stomachic, laxative, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-pruritic. It is also used in several conditions like dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, constipation, strangury, cough, bronchitis, fever, giddiness, conjunctivitis, general debility and diabetes as reported in various literature. In our study most of these clinical conditions have been verified confirming its clinical utility for various illnesses. Besides these, it has also relieved anxiety, dementia, dysmenorrhoea, gingivitis, headache, impotency, lumbago, pharyngitis, toothache and vertigo, thus unfolding the vast area of its clinical application. A total of 129 cases (59 males and 79 females) have participated in this study at various Institutes /Units under Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy to clinically verify the symptoms of Curcuma longa, as mentioned in the homoeopathic proving of this drug carried out under the Council.

This observational study aimed to see the usefulness of homeopathic therapy in the management of gastroenteritis. A prospective, non-comparative, multi-centre observational study was conducted by Central Council for Research in Homeopathy at its various institutes and units in India during October, 2005- September, 2008. A total of 498 patients of all age groups suffering from gastroenteritis were enrolled in the study. A total of 22 predefined trial medicines were short listed after repertorizing nosological symptoms of gastroenteritis. Selected medicine was prescribed in 6C potency and was repeated from few minutes to few hours, as per the need of the case. A gastroenteritis symptom score (GSS) was designed to assess the severity of illness and the result was analyzed using SPSS version 16. Three hundred and seventy followed up patients were analyzed. The total mean gastroenteritis symptom score (GSS) evaluated at baseline and at end were 8.56 4.26 and 0.45 0.85, respectively. The difference in the mean score was found to be statistically significant (p= 0.0001). The results were found to be significant with 18 predetermined trial medicines (p=<0.05). Eighty seven percent (n=323) of the patients needed the following nine trial medicines:
Nux vomica (n=81), Pulsatilla (n=51), Arsenicum album (n=44), Cinchona officinalis (n=44), Sulphur (n=30), Antimonium crudum(n=25), Argentum nitricum(n=23), Bryonia alba (n=15) and Carbo vegetabilis (n=10).
This multicentre observational study hints the usefulness of homeopathic medicines in case of gastroenteritis. Controlled studies should investigate the efficacy and effectiveness.

EXTRA MURAL RESEARCH
Evidence based clinical study on the effect of homoeopathic medicines in cases of ovarian cysts
p. 36
Girish Gupta, Nilima Singh, Richa Singh, Santosh Singh, Chaturbhuj Nayak, Anil Khurana
Background and Objectives:
Patients with persistent ovarian cyst for more than 6 months which do not respond to hormone therapy usually, require surgical treatment. Surgery should be avoided as much as possible in unmarried and childless women where future reproductive functions are of prime concern. There are a few claims by homoeopathic physicians to have treated cases of ovarian cysts with homoeopathic medicines. Such claims, however, have neither been scientifically documented nor published. To give scientific support to such sporadic claims, a clinical study was carried out to evaluate the usefulness of homoeopathic medicines for treatment of patients suffering from ovarian cyst.
Methods:
A total of 73 patients suffering from ovarian cysts were enrolled, as per inclusion criteria out of which 48 completed the study according to protocol. Medicines selected on the basis of principles of homoeopathy were prescribed and changes in the size of ovarian cysts were assessed at the end of 1 year on the basis of pre and post treatment ultrasonography reports and hormonal tests.
Results:
After comparing pre and post treatment ultrasonography reports, the difference in mean values of maximum dimension of ovarian cyst was found to be statistically significant (p value < 0.05). Cyst was totally resolved in 8 (16.67%) patients, 10 (20.83%) patients had reduction in the size of the cysts, 21 (43.75%) patients remained status quo while 9 (18.75%) did not improve.
Natrum muriaticum
(n=7),
Pulsatilla
(n= 3),
Sepia
(n=3) and
Calcarea carbonicum
(n= 2) were found to be most useful homoeopathic medicines.
Conclusion:
The preliminary results obtained from this observational study are encouraging. The study indicates the positive role of Homoeopathic therapy in the management of ovarian cysts. Such study with bigger sample size through randomized controlled trial is needed for further validation.
