The book entitled, ‘An Update on Bowel Nosodes with Comparisons’ authored by Dr Chaturbhuja Nayak, Dr Debadatta Nayak and Dr Varanasi Roja, seeks an intended audience of researchers, teachers, students and general practitioners of Homoeopathy, in quest of concise information about bowel nosodes, particularly when realising the dearth of available literature on this subject. This work embraces maximum information on bowel nosodes published in various journals and books, fortified with historical facts, clinical experiences of reputed homoeopathic physicians clinicians and latest research outcomes and also about bowel flora in health and disease. This makes the book a necessary addition to one's consortium of homoeopathic literature. There have been paradoxical views despite the yesteryear's applicability of bowel nosodes in homoeopathic practice. Although JC Burnett, HC Allen, Samuel Swan, DM Foubister, Edward Bach and John Paterson, etc., have been vociferous in support of the bowel nosodes, yet for others, their use is an enigma.
The book is divided into 19 chapters including one extra mural research study by the first author, originally published in Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy. The book is structured in a way that makes it user-friendly. The authors have provided exhaustive knowledge about importance of bowel nosodes in health and disease enriched with irrefutable historical facts. The chapter on ‘Nomenclature’ interestingly puts forward the question of bowel nosodes corresponding to any recognised taxonomical classes of bacteria of today's time. This has been dealt with in the most scientific way by tabulating the comparison of bacteriological profiles of bowel nosodes with respect to naming as suggested by OA Julian, Stephen Cumming and M Alexander. The chapter on ‘Dose, Potency and Repetition', emphasises different approaches among our homoeopathic community. The ‘Merits and De-merits’ chapter of this book has comprehensively incorporated the comments of many researchers and other authors.
There is still a debate on sources and microbiological composition of these bowel nosodes which are known to be effective in clinical practice. The authors have attempted to correlate the clinical works of diverse writers on bowel nosodes providing readers an insight regarding the urgent need for to standardising the preparation of bowel nosodes.
Special Features of the Book | | |
- The authors have efficiently put forward the painstaking works of Edward Bach, John Paterson, Russell Malcolm and a few other pioneers on bowel nosodes which were previously not accessible to the homoeopathic profession. This book is a perfect reference source for anything, one would like to know about bowel nosodes. Areas of less interest and applicability of bowel nosodes by the homoeopathic community have been diligently covered by the authors who have taken into account maximum possible literatures since 1950s.
- This novel book has bridged the gap, by providing a comparison of the bowel nosodes with other homoeopathic medicines. This analytical comparison is the hallmark of the book.
- The inclusion of reprint of an extra-mural research study done by the first author is particularly meant to reinforce the possibility of clinical translation of bowel nosodes, which has remained under the shadows. Through this, the authors wish to sensitise readers about scientific validation of bowel nosodes.
- Although the clear picture of each bowel nosode was hard to ascertain due to lack of systematic proving as per Hahnemannian principles, the authors, to the extent possible, have described the symptoms, recorded by renowned authors, required for prescriptions, under respective bowel nosodes.
- The comparisons with constitutional drugs under each bowel nosode serve as desktop guide for easy differentiation during remedy selection in a case.
- This book tries to enrich therapeutics of bowel nosodes in an unassuming way. Despite the challenges such as obscure sources of bowel nosodes, vague method of their preparation and lack of proving according to Hahnemannian methods, the authors have made all efforts to make this book helpful to the clinicians, teachers and students of homoeopathy.
Road Ahead… | | |
- Success stories of the practitioners using bowel nosodes in their clinical practice can be a feature to be added in the revised edition of this book
- Some bowel nosodes such as Faecalis Bacillus Coccal Co., and Mutabile have only a few symptoms, which are inadequate for prescription. Thus, further study of such bowel nosodes is required
